Nu launches services in the US, Goes Global

Nu, one of the largest Latam-based banks with over 140 million customers, is expanding its operations into the U.S. and the world.

Nu recently announced the start of its operations in the U.S. after receiving conditional approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency in January, partnering with Kansas City-based Lead Bank to introduce its services under a bank partner model.

David Velez, Founder and CEO of Nu, declared this was a major achievement for the company, which is already the largest digital institution in Brazil with a growing user base in Mexico and Colombia.

“Since our founding, we have believed that consumer-obsessed digital banking is the future of retail banking globally, and after proving this hypothesis with over 140 million fanatical customers in Latin America, we are excited to start executing our thesis beyond our core region,” he stated.

Nu enters this complex financial market with a yield account offering 3.50% APY on deposits paid daily, a debit card, and fee-free international money transfers to Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia, with more countries being added soon.

Through a partnership with Mastercard, the company’s credit card will offer unlimited 1.5% cashback without annual fees.

Cristina Junqueira, Co-Founder and CEO of Nu US, stressed that through this product portfolio, the company wants to “earn the place of being people’s primary banking relationship,” remarking that “capturing even a small share of the U.S. market will be transformative for our business.”

Besides setting up shop in the U.S., Nu is launching a global product called Nu Global, which uses USDC and EURC, Circle’s dollar- and euro-pegged stablecoins, to target the growing cross-border needs of digital nomads, offering 3.50% APY and 2.20% APY yields for the two currencies. In addition, the account also offers a virtual Mastercard to facilitate international spending.

Vélez explains that Nu Global was born to bring financial services to people who live “borderless lives,” estimated at around 300 million by the World Bank, easing money management tasks on one platform.
