    Key Takeaways

Edaily and Maeil Business Newspaper detailed that Jeonbuk Bank has executed South Korea’s first reported traditional bank loan secured by bitcoin.New rules effective Oct. 1 let Jeonbuk Bank pursue court-supervised collateral recovery without holding bitcoin.Jeonbuk Bank limits the arrangement to corporate borrowers, with rates and collateral requirements undisclosed.

A Bitcoin Loan Without Touching Bitcoin

Jeonbuk Bank, a subsidiary of JB Financial Group, has introduced a restricted corporate lending arrangement that accepts bitcoin as collateral while keeping the cryptocurrency entirely outside the bank’s custody. The news was first reported in an exclusive by the regional publication Edaily, and reporter Lee Jeong Hun.

Instead, licensed third-party custodians safeguard the pledged bitcoin, while Jeonbuk Bank handles credit assessments, collateral valuations, and loan issuance. The arrangement is limited to corporate working capital, including payroll, supplier payments, and everyday operating expenses. Individual borrowers are excluded, and the digital asset bitcoin (BTC) remains the only accepted cryptocurrency.

Korean media differ slightly on the rollout. Edaily describes a limited service launch, while Maeil Business Newspaper characterizes the transaction as a pilot involving an existing corporate loan.

New Court Rules Open the Door

The real breakthrough centers on what happens when a borrower defaults. Under revised Civil Enforcement Rules effective Oct. 1, 2026, Jeonbuk Bank can pursue court-supervised recovery without ever taking possession of the pledged bitcoin. A court-ordered sale would liquidate the collateral, with proceeds applied toward the outstanding debt.

    Ledger

This structure allows the bank to operate within existing lending regulations while avoiding direct cryptocurrency custody. Custodians must satisfy South Korea’s regulatory requirements, including registration, security certification, segregated asset protection and applicable cold-storage obligations.

    Bitcoin Gets the Green Light

Jeonbuk Bank selected bitcoin because of its substantial market capitalization, trading liquidity and established price discovery. The lender reportedly conducted internal stress tests examining bitcoin’s suitability as collateral during steep market declines.

It also developed a digital-asset valuation framework combining weighted prices from multiple international exchanges with volatility indicators to minimize pricing distortions. However, the South Korean bank has kept several important details under wraps. Interest rates, loan-to-value ratios, liquidation thresholds, loan amounts and the borrower’s identity have not been publicly disclosed.

A New Chapter for Korean Banking

The transaction represents a tangible development in South Korea’s efforts to incorporate digital assets into traditional finance (TradFi) services. Jeonbuk Bank has previously explored blockchain payments, settlements, remittances and stablecoins. It is also developing an integrated wallet connecting traditional bank accounts with digital assets.

The lender plans to refine its monitoring and recovery procedures before considering additional cryptocurrencies or broader lending purposes. For corporate bitcoin holders, the proposition is simple. They can unlock Korean won liquidity without immediately liquidating their holdings.

Still, with commercial terms undisclosed and access restricted to businesses, South Korea’s bitcoin-backed banking experiment has cleared its first hurdle without revealing how far the country’s lenders are prepared to go.
