Solana’s DvP Takes Aim at the Days-Long Settlement Window
In the traditional finance (TradFi) world, when two companies want to swap two assets, settlement can take days. In order to solve this issue, the Layer 1 blockchain network Solana created a new tool for financial institutions, calling it Solana DvP. Essentially, the tech is described as an “open-source escrow program that offers financial institutions an open-sourced API for delivery-versus-payment settlement on Solana,” according to the announcement.
The foundation claimed on Tuesday that until the DvP arrived, “institutional trades settling onchain have typically relied on bespoke smart contracts.” The Solana DvP reportedly guarantees that both the assets change hands at the exact same split second; if either side is missing, then the entire trade simply cancels, so no one loses out.
“Atomic settlement removes counterparty risk that is inherent in traditional finance,” Catherine Gu, Solana Foundation head of product for digital assets, remarked in the release. “Solana DvP program provides institutions with one open standard across the Solana ecosystem, on public infrastructure, with finality in seconds instead of days.”
JPMorgan Brings Wall Street ‘Settlement Expertise’
The multinational financial institution JPMorgan, a bank that commands $5.1 trillion in assets under management (AUM), advised the team and provided “valuable input.” The Foundation explained that the bank’s years of securities settlement expertise helped bolster Solana DvP development. Rhodel D’souza, head of markets for digital assets at JPMorgan, insisted that institutional investors need this type of framework.
“A shared, open standard for atomic delivery-versus-payment is exactly the kind of foundational infrastructure institutional market participants require to operate at scale without introducing settlement risk and counterparty exposure. We were pleased to contribute our settlement expertise,” D’souza said on Tuesday.
The tool, backed by the financial giant’s advice, could signal a power shift toward blockchain adoption, with TradFi leveraging ready-made rails. The question is whether or not institutional investors and banks themselves will use the Solana DvP protocol and if settlement risk truly becomes obsolete. A great deal of Layer 1 (L1) chains are vying to become Wall Street’s default backend, and which project makes it there first is still an open question in itself.
